HOUSING NETWORK :: Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the questions that people often ask The Housing Network about community housing. If you have other questions, please contact your nearest Housing Network office.

Is Community Housing the same as Public Housing?
No. Community housing is social housing that offers a secure and affordable housing option for people on low to moderate incomes, and is managed by a community organisation. In this case the housing offered is either owned or managed by The Housing Network.

Is Community Housing the same as Transitional Housing?
No. Transitional housing is short term housing provided as a response to prevent homelessness and is funded by the Office of Housing.

How is my rent calculated?
Rent is calculated at below market rental of the property and depends on your household income. Please go to the Tenancy Matters tab for more information.

How can I pay my rent?
Rent can be paid by Bpay, Direct Debit, Centrepay or Over the Counter at any RHNL office.

Is there a waiting list?
No. There is no waiting list however you may submit an application to go onto The Housing Network’s Housing Register. Approved applications stay on file for 12 months. If you have not been offered a property within 12 months and you still require community housing you will need to submit an updated application.

When will I be housed?
Being on the Register does not guarantee an offer of housing. When a property becomes vacant, The Housing Network assesses the suitability of the property to households listed on the Register, in terms of desired location and property size. If you are offered a property and it is not suitable, you will not be disadvantaged by a refusal. You will be included in each assessment while you are on the register.

Will I need references?
References will be beneficial to your application, however if you are unable to supply any your application will not necessarily be rejected.

Will I need to pay a bond?
Yes, you will be required to pay a bond. The bond is equal to 4 weeks rent and is held in trust by the Residential Tenancies Bond Authority.

Am I eligible if I am working?
Yes. Please go to the Eligibility tab for more information.

Am I eligible if my only income source is Centrelink payments?
Yes. Please go to the Eligibility tab for more information

What happens if my household income changes?
Unless your income is significantly increased or reduced it is unlikely to change the amount of rent you are charged. Income is reviewed on an annual basis.
